East Grinstead Bookshop is locally owned and quintessentially English, filled to its 16th-century rafters with wonderful books, both new and second-hand. There’s also a dog-friendly café tucked inside the Tudor building. It’s where I held my first ever book signing, and I’m hugely grateful to the owner, John Pye.

They host regular events, book clubs and signings, and even opera evenings for the well-heeled. The shop is also a thriving chess hub, with a board always available for passing players.

Nottingham Castle — and the myriad man-made caves, passages and chambers carved into the sandstone beneath it — is home to the fictional “The Lair” in the Gideon Fox crime thriller series.

‘Rites of passage and redemption, beautifully interwoven.’

‘A fabulous read. Twists and turns aplenty, which don’t unravel until the final chapter. Excellent debut novel. Five stars, all day, every day.’

‘Couldn’t put it down. J.W.Neville - you owe me a lost nights sleep! But well worth it.’

‘More twists and turns than a corkscrew rollercoaster. The jumps through the decades, clever and authentic. Made me laugh, made me cry. Wonderful debut.’
